Aware that more people have been visiting food pantries as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Congregational Church of Brookfield was motivated to create a garden as both a way to teach community members how to grow produce, and to provide organically grown fruits and vegetables to a local food bank. The fruit and vegetable garden will be located on the grounds of the church, and volunteers will be taught to raise produce using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and organic gardening techniques, primarily through hands-on lessons with a UConn-certified Master Gardener. Volunteers will also learn how to determine realistic target yields, rotate crops, and note how weather conditions, disease and pest damage impact the garden’s growth. The New Milford Food Bank will leverage their efforts by providing their customers with recipes that use the produce supplied by the garden. The church congregation will form the initial base of volunteers, but interested members of the Brookfield community are welcome to participate too.
