The Brookfield Education Foundation funded a grant request from the Brookfield Library for a program featuring Brendan Slocumb, author of last summer’s One Town One Read – The Violin Conspiracy – for two innovative and thought-provoking presentations. At a presentation at the Brookfield Library, Mr. Slocumb explored how exercising creativity, particularly musically, has therapeutic and restorative elements. He shared his own personal stories and musical talents – which have both served as inspiration for his novels – and encouraged the audience to discover and engage their own creative voices. His presentation was followed by a Q&A session with a lively and engaged audience. The following day, Mr. Slocumb was the keynote speaker at Brookfield High School’s “Diversity Day.” Addressing the theme of “being true to yourself,” he shared his powerful and poignant experiences growing up as a young Black classical musician. Students were given the opportunity to ask Mr. Slocumb questions to further expand their understanding of the diverse world in Brookfield and beyond.
